Here’s The Thing...

We sacrifice ourselves and our own well-being, believing it’s what’s best for our children and because we can’t figure out how the heck to do it any other way given the immense responsibility we feel for well, everything. But nothing could be farther from the truth.

The best possible thing we can do for our special and high needs children? Tend to ourselves with exquisite care—to our bodies, our minds, our emotions, our spirits, and our time. Because more than anything our special and high needs children need us to be present and compassionate with them, not just today or tomorrow, but for the long haul. They need us to be able to keep showing up for them day in and day out, with love and patience. When resentment grows and burnout takes over, we only give them a shadow of what they need and deserve. 

Anybody who has been in a long-term caregiving role for someone with special or high needs will tell you that there comes a time (usually at a breaking point) when you realize you can't sacrifice yourself any longer. Tending to yourself is not a luxury. It's a matter of survival.

But here’s the blessing in all this: While finding a new way is going to be amazing for you, it’s also going to transform the lives of your children. When you are able to show up day in and day out from a place of total well-being you become the rock your child needs to heal, or grow, or thrive, or even just to live a life that is as joyful and as possible, given their challenges.

*I define “special and high needs” as any child who has physical, emotional, behavioral, psychological, and/or social challenges. This includes (but is not limited to): ADHD, ADD, ODD, autism spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, PTSD, learning differences, physical or cognitive differences/disabilities, and other behavioral/emotional challenges. My definition embraces any Mama who is doing what I call “parenting plus”, i.e. parenting one or more children PLUS dealing with and managing a child’s special and/or high needs.

I came into The Burnout to Balance Blueprint walking through life in a fog. Things happened daily, but I couldn't tell you what by the end of the day. Now, on the other hand, I have a schedule, I know my daily and long-term goals, I have habits that help me succeed, and my life is more organized. My relationships within my family are better because I have boundaries. I am very happy with the outcome of my experience in this program. My biggest take away was learning to prioritize myself and my family in a way that helps us all live in peace. Thank you!
